Rebuilding the Church at Lyttelton

The Anglican Parish of Lyttelton is rebuilding itself after the earthquakes destroyed and damaged its buildings and dispersed many of its parishioners. The relocation of  the St Saviour's church building (originally the Church at West Lyttelton) from The Cathedral Grammar School, and its reopening on the Holy Trinity site was  a significant step forward. Retaining walls have been rebuilt, and the Parish is working towards raising a new bell tower and repairing the badly damaged Vicarage.

Architect's proposal for Belfry

Belfry

The bell, and bell tower roof were rescued when the Holy Trinity Church building was demolished after being severely damaged in the earthquakes of 2010-11. A fund raising project was undertaken to reuse the roof on a new freestanding structure to sit alongside the relocated St Saviour's Church. The Seafarer's bell can now ring once more!

Work on the new belfry is now complete!

The Vicarage

The Vicarage sustained significant damage in the earthquakes (particularly to the interior) and with the retaining walls now in place, underwent repair. The Parish has restored it to its status as a dwelling and has a downstairs space available for Parish use.
